7. Minimalist Home Office: Essential Hacks
According to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics, the U.S. averaged 8.5 hours of work during the week. The 40-hour workweek is almost a dream at this point. With constant connection through smart phones and home offices, our work is integrated into our lives in new ways. How to make the most of that time can be difficult to determine. In this chapter, I’ll walk you through the ways in which a modern minimalist home office supports productivity and help you organize the space to maximize focus.
The most productive minimalist home office has 3 things in common. There is less choice, less tools, and less friction. I’ll share more detail below, but first I want you to imagine the more abstract concept of each quality. They all contribute to a more peaceful mind and they’re qualities you wouldn’t necessarily expect in an office. You may wonder what “less choice” has to do with productivity and how you’re supposed to do your job with less tools. Step back and imagine working within a space that combines all 3. Imagine yourself less frustrated by choice, less encumbered by miscellaneous clutter, and how that supports ease of movement both physically and mentally.
Less Choice
The concept of having fewer choices in an office may not be the first thing you associate with a minimalist lifestyle. It’s easy to build up an office as a space of infinite possibilities and creativity without end. It is thought of as inspiring and motivating to associate the space where you work with such concepts. Practicing modern minimalism, however, shows how building a space suited to focus rather than chaos helps achieve the dreams and possibilities. It’s often said that the most creative people have messy desks and workspaces. Assigning that kind of clutter to every person in search of creativity is like assigning a 4-hour sleep schedule to everyone because that’s how Martha Stewart or Jeff Bezos function. Practicing minimalism in your office helps you tap into the creativity by putting down the minimalist organizing methods as a foundation.
In practice, less choice begins with a mental shift when it comes to your work. It’s easy to be overwhelmed by the tasks and priorities stacking up in your inbox as well as your mind. Make the choice to focus on what you can control in order to foster productivity. You control how you approach your work and the pattern you follow to complete it. Take a look outside of your work, as well. Identify areas where you can simplify your choices in order to avoid spending time deciding on something. Your home is one place and the work you’re doing by reading and applying the principles in this book will lighten the load of choice. Even the simple act of downsizing the amount of cookware in you kitchen creates a few less choices when you open up the cabinet doors.
Even decisions like what to eat and drink are choices drawing on your brain power. Find the routines that take having to decide out of the equation.
